# Categories and organization

> Built-in categories, how to create custom ones with their own colors, and how to re-categorize items directly from Fund Flow.

Categories drive the breakdown in [Fund Flow](/insights/fund-flow), the bars in [budgets](/insights/budgets), and the grouping in reports. Accurate categories are what make those views useful.

## Built-in categories

DueZen ships with categories covering most household and personal expenses. Each has a default color used in charts and budget bars, and you can change any of those colors.

| Category  | Typically covers                                      |
| --------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Housing   | Rent, mortgage, HOA fees, property taxes              |
| Utilities | Electricity, gas, water, internet, phone              |
| Streaming | Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Apple TV                      |
| Food      | Groceries, meal delivery, dining                      |
| Insurance | Health, auto, life, renters or home                   |
| Transport | Car payments, transit passes, fuel                    |
| Health    | Gym, prescriptions, therapy                           |
| Finance   | Credit cards, loan payments, investment contributions |
| Savings   | Transfers toward goals                                |
| Other     | Anything uncategorized                                |

## Create a custom category

    On any bill's add or edit screen, tap the category field.

    It sits at the bottom of the picker.

    Choose from the 30-color palette, then confirm.

Custom categories appear alongside the built-ins everywhere in the app — the bill list, the Fund Flow breakdown, budget settings, and reports. Delete unused ones from the categories management screen.

<Tip>
  Start with broad buckets — Housing, Food, Fun — and split them only when a pattern actually emerges. Over-specific categories are harder to keep accurate, and inaccurate categories make Fund Flow worse, not better.

## Re-categorize from Fund Flow

If items are piling up under **Other**, you can fix them without hunting through the bill list.

    On the Fund Flow donut chart, tap the segment to expand the list of items beneath it.

  <Step title="Open an item">
    Tap it to go to its detail screen.

  <Step title="Update the category">
    Change the category field and save. Fund Flow reflects it immediately.
