# Add your first item

> How smart auto-fill works, and how to set the amount, due date, category, and recurrence for a new bill or subscription.

Adding an item takes a few seconds. Name it, set the amount and due date, choose how often it repeats.

## How smart auto-fill works

When you start typing a name like Netflix, Spotify, or Amazon Prime, DueZen recognizes the service and pre-fills the category, icon, and recurrence. It matches on partial input, so typing `net` surfaces Netflix as a suggestion.

Auto-fill covers hundreds of subscriptions, utilities, and financial services. The more specific the name, the better the match — and you can override any pre-filled value.

* Type a name and the icon and category appear automatically
* Tap any pre-filled field to replace it with your own value
* Unrecognized names fall back to a generic bill icon
* Your custom entries are remembered for future suggestions

## Set the amount, due date, and category

<Steps>
  <Step title="Enter the amount">
    Use the full payment amount for each cycle, not a partial or estimated figure.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the due date">
    Tap the date picker and choose the exact upcoming due date. For recurring items this date anchors every future due date.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a category">
    Pick from built-ins like Housing, Utilities, or Streaming, or create a custom category with its own color. Categories drive the breakdown in [Fund Flow](/insights/fund-flow).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add notes (optional)">
    Reference numbers, account details, and vendor contact info all live in the notes field.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Start with your biggest bills. Once rent, utilities, and credit cards are in, the smaller subscriptions fall into place around them.
</Tip>

## Recurrence and end dates

Choose how often the payment repeats. Six intervals are available, from weekly to yearly.

| Interval   | Repeats             | Typical use                      |
| ---------- | ------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Weekly     | Every 7 days        | Meal delivery, weekly services   |
| Biweekly   | Every 14 days       | Loans aligned to a paycheck      |
| Monthly | Same day each month | Most subscriptions and utilities |
| Quarterly  | Every 3 months      | Insurance premiums               |
| Semiannual | Every 6 months      | Registrations, some memberships  |
| Yearly     | Every 12 months     | Annual memberships and domains   |

For commitments with a known end — a 12-month gym contract, a limited-term loan — turn on the **End date** toggle below the recurrence picker. The date you set is the last expected payment, and the item archives itself the day after.

Leave the toggle off for anything open-ended. The item rolls forward every cycle until you archive or delete it.

<Note>
  Archived items are not deleted. Their payment history stays in your records, and you can restore them at any time. See [Export and archiving](/advanced/export-and-archiving).
